Green transport

August 24, 2022
Choosing planet-friendly transport is a great way to lower your carbon footprint. Thinking more creatively about how you get around could save you money, improve your health and even introduce you to a new hobby.

We all know that it’s better for the environment to travel on foot or bike wherever possible. Your workplace may have a cycle to work scheme, which could help you to make significant savings on a bike or any other cycling equipment.

E-bikes and e-scooters are also gaining popularity, meaning that you can arrive at your destination without breaking a sweat. Just check out the environmental credentials of the manufacturer.

Making use of public transport instead of driving or using a taxi service is another great way to cut down on emissions. Apps such as Citymapper are really handy for planning your journey using public transport, while the Train Line app shows you the best deals on train and coach travel. It might be worth investing in a season ticket or looking at travel card options to ensure you get the best prices.

Unfortunately, we don’t all live in an area serviced by great public transport networks. If you need to drive, you can use fuel-efficient driving methods such as reducing your speed and ensuring you’re always in the most efficient gear.

When it’s time to buy a new car, consider an electric or hybrid vehicle. The heftier upfront cost is balanced out somewhat by lower fuel and maintenance costs. Carpooling is another way to make your journey more efficient, whether this is to work, the gym or to a holiday destination.

Speaking of holidays – we’ve all learned to appreciate trips closer to home in recent months. If you are looking to venture further afield, flying and cruises come with significant carbon emissions attached to them, so it’s always worth considering options such as a sleeper train. If you do fly, ensure you choose a flight which has a carbon offset program, or you can make your own equivalent donation using a company such as Atmosfair.
